It was reported back in '95 that part of the reason consumers were hesitant about buying HIStory, along with Michael's image at the time, was because of the cost. It cost over $30 in most stores.

"Marketing dollars" refers to the promo budget of $25 million.

I don't listen to HIStory much as I just find the whole flow of the album to be... all over the place. Jumping so starkly between stuff like 2 Bad and Smile, Scream and Childhood, etc. It feels too much like a collection of songs rather than a coherent album to me (ironically a criticism often made towards Thriller, which I think does a good job of tying so many disparate sounds and genres together and getting them to co-exist nicely).

I'd have preferred Michael to have largely produced all of his own stuff after '87, rather than hiring these batches of superstar producers where you had certain people working on one part of the album, certain people working on another etc. I'm not convinced that the end result of that approach is as coherent as Michael must've thought it was.

The first five tracks are incredible and flow well, though. I just don't think it does quite as well for the remaining 10, although it also doesn't run out of momentum in its later stages anything like as badly as Invincible does.

Yes, but the price of HIStory varied in many places. Hong Kong was the CHEAPEST. In fact, it was cheaper for a fan to get the HK version imported and buy it in Australia than it was to buy the Australian version!

In early 1997, I think, HIStory became the biggest climbing album up the charts after WH Smith reduced the price to 9.99 for a short time. As a result, HIStory made 20million in the UK that week!

That just went to show that the price prohibited sales of HIStory to a significant extent, but the upshot of all that is the singles from HIStory sold more than the singles from his previous two albums did respectively.

So, it's swings and roundabouts, really. Considering Michael made $100 million and Sony made $92 million as well as the fact that HIStory was almost as big a source of revenue as Thriller almost a year into its promotion......means HIStory is not a flop by any means.

Additionally, Bad and Dangerous also had price cuts in various Territories. Some stores in America started cutting the price of Bad quite early in its campaign.

    Swings and roundabouts, really.

How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, some afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even concieve of your life without it? Perhaps four or five times more. Perhaps not even that. How many times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless." - Brandon Lee

This is great info, PG. Judging on what we see as sales, you may think HIStory didn't do that wild but I forget that MJ could always depend on global sales to make even on the album's budget. So HIStory was truly a huge success.

Yes. Here's an estimated breakdown MJNI did in 1998:

    HIStory

    Total gross - $300,000, 000

    Marketing - $30,000,000

    Production - $17,500,000

    Distribution - $10,000,000

    Video Production - $15,000,000

    Songwriting Royalties - $1,500,000

    Sub Total - $196,000,000

    Artist's Cut - $100,000,000

    Total Profit - $96,000,000

Sony made less than Michael. I can give a breakdown of how these estimates were reached, if you want?
