Vocal Ticks: Gimmick or do they make the song?

This is my first poll so not sure if I did it correct so bare with me.

My husband and I were listeing to some older Michael stuff and my hubby looked at me during one of Michael's yelp break downs, and Hubby said it sounded like one of our papillions barking, he rolled his eyes, but he was still jamming out to it., he is a hardcore floyd stones fan so I expect him to not love all MJs stuff.

So I told him, some people say the ticks make the songs, some find it too much gimmick and over powers the essence of the music..

So which does everyone here prefer.

Ticks, hiccups, yelps, hees, make Michael's music, and puts his personal stamp on it.(IMO).you could go a decade without hearing one of his songs, and hear one you never heard before, but you will know on the first vocal tick that it is Michael Jackson.

    My vote
Love the vocal ticks and his made up words

For the most part yes, I love em. But there are some moments where he went a bit too far with them.

What Budz said. Kinda glad there was not that much on the Invincible album.

Yeah I love them. I'm sure there's some moments where I'd say they aren't needed but I can't really think of any as I type this.

It's one of those things that makes a song uniquely Michael Jackson's. Nine times out of ten I love them.

    Thanks for the votes.

The only song I take some issue with was when I heard Bad acapella and now I cannot stop hearing it in the song..He does some very odd sounding strangled sound before almost every damn word..Like half cough, half gag and half someone choking him LOL..I am sure you guys know what I am talking about..Not sure if he thought it sounded some how cool or tough or what, but while it does add character, I suppose. It really is a very odd sounding..

Do you mean the "dah!" type sound? That's a pretty standard ad-lib of his haha.

    Smooth,

Yeah, but it seems to be every single sentence and I am not sure what it is supposed to convey..I have read the hiccups and gulps and such helps convey certain feelings that cannot really be expressed by words, but yeah you got it right..It just sounds a bit odd on every sentence (like with MITM he is hiccuping the whole time but I love it, some cannot stand it)..But hey I love his raspy thick vocals, on bad though it does sound like he is sorta being choked..The other times he uses it, it is all good

Would you really call Dah, or Hiccups ad-libs though? I thought ad-libs(and I may be wrong) were more half made up jackson words, like during the bad tour he keeps shouting "bato" (I think it means everybody not sure) I thought that was more a classic example of ad-libs. Random sounds, stutters, breathy gasps I am not so sure..What do you think?

I think it is to convey some sort of toughness in a way for that song, I think it works as long as you don't think about it too much, isolated it sounds really weird, yeah. Maybe ad-lib was the wrong term to use. It's just one of his trademark sounds I guess.
